Private Stock DNA, Stage-Ready PRS Bass Power

The PRS Grainger 4-String Bass is what happens when a world class session and touring bassist designs a workhorse with the PRS team. It has the tone, feel, and reliability pro players expect, with the kind of eye candy 10-Top that makes you want to pick it up every time you walk past the case.

Gary Grainger built this as his do-everything bass. It goes from glassy, hi-fi clarity to gritty punch without ever getting muddy, and it stays comfortable and inspiring through long sessions and late-night gigs.

Private Stock Heritage In A Core Model

The Grainger 4 is the evolution of Gary’s Private Stock bass line, distilled into a Core PRS that regular working bassists can actually take on the road. Gary collaborated with heavy hitters like Wyzard and Kevin Walker to nail a design that feels familiar but delivers modern power and control.

To quote Gary: “These basses give me everything I need for recording and playing live… all the tone, clarity, power, and feel… everything.” Real talk, that is exactly how this one feels in the hands. It is a serious tool that just happens to look like a piece of art.

10-Top Maple Snap, Mahogany Punch, Fire Red Smokeburst

Up top you get a carved 10-Top maple cap that is as figured as it gets, shot in Fire Red Smokeburst. The maple brings snap, definition, and a bit of glassy attack so every note has clear edges and bloom.

Underneath, a solid mahogany back delivers that thick, warm low end and chewy midrange you want from a great bass. The violin carve keeps it comfortable against your body and gives the whole instrument a lively, resonant feel that you can hear even before you plug in.

GG 4 Neck: Fast, Comfortable, And Precise

The maple GG 4 neck profile fills your hand just enough to feel solid, but never fights you when you move around the neck. At 34 inches, the scale length keeps the low end tight and piano like, with great intonation all the way up to the 24th fret.

A 10 inch rosewood fingerboard radius hits that sweet spot between speed and comfort. Chords feel natural, slides are buttery smooth, and upper register runs are effortless. Neck depth and width are dialed so you can play long sets without your hand locking up.

PRS/Grainger Active Electronics: Sculpt Your Sound

Dual GG4 humbuckers feed PRS/Grainger active electronics, giving you a huge palette of usable tones. The pickups are clear and articulate, with enough grit when you dig in to cut through dense mixes without ever getting harsh.

The 2 push/pull volume controls and 3 knob EQ let you shape your sound on the fly. Go from deep, round R&B thump to tight, modern fusion clarity in seconds, and then park it in that perfect spot where the bass supports the band but still speaks. It records beautifully direct and loves running into pedals and big amps alike.

Dialed In, Inspected, And Ready For The Gig

This specific bass (serial 0369911) is sitting in our Evansville, Indiana shop right now. It has been inspected three times, strung up, and set up by player techs who treat every instrument like it is going into their own rig.

Tell us your preferred string gauge and action at checkout and we will dial it in before it ships. You get free 2-3 day shipping, our 72-Hour Love-It Guarantee, and a PRS hardshell case so it shows up safe, comfortable, and ready to hit the stage or studio on day one.

The Lowdown

The Lowdown

We get it. Buying a guitar you haven’t played is a big decision. You need to know it’s going to feel right, sound right, and inspire you the second you open the case. We put together the questions we’d be asking if we were in your shoes—the real-world stuff that specs alone can’t answer. If there’s anything else you’re wondering about, just give us a call.

The Grainger 4 comes straight out of Gary Grainger’s Private Stock design playbook, so you are getting that level of thought and refinement in a Core PRS. The 10-Top maple, mahogany body, and GG4 pickups give it a very balanced, professional voice that holds its own against anything in the boutique world. Compared to many high end basses, this one feels a bit more immediate and responsive, with a focused low end that engineers and bandleaders love.
The 10-Top designation is about the visual grade of the maple, but the maple itself absolutely affects the tone. That carved maple cap adds snap, clarity, and a bit of glassy attack so your notes have definition and bloom. Paired with the mahogany back, you get a mix of warmth and cut that works in almost any style. The fact that it looks incredible under stage lights is just a bonus.
The PRS/Grainger active circuit is all about usable control, not gimmicks. The GG4 humbuckers start with a clear, full, low noise signal, and the active EQ lets you shape that into vintage thump, modern hi fi, or anything in between. The two push/pull volume knobs and 3 band EQ are voiced so small moves make musical changes instead of wild swings, which makes this bass incredibly easy to dial in fast on stage or in the studio.
This bass is built to live in both worlds. The tight low end, clear mids, and active EQ make it a dream for recording direct, where every note needs to sit perfectly in the mix. On stage, the 34″ scale, balanced body, and quiet electronics keep it solid, comfortable, and consistent night after night. If you need one bass that can cover sessions, tours, and everything in between, this is that instrument.
Of course. Every guitar gets our full Player-Perfect™ setup, but tell us your preferred string gauge and action at checkout, and we’ll dial it in exactly to your spec before it leaves the shop.
This guitar is covered by our 72-Hour Love-It Guarantee. If you’re not completely inspired by it, just let us know. We’ll make it right.
If you order before 3 PM CST on a weekday, it ships the same day. We’ll get it into your hands fast with free, insured 2-3 day shipping.
