Private Stock DNA in a Workhorse 4-String

The PRS Grainger 4-String Bass takes everything Gary Grainger loves about his Private Stock instruments and brings it into a core model that real working bassists can actually put on stages and in studios every night. It is powerful, clear, incredibly flexible, and dressed up in a 10-Top Cobalt Smokeburst top that looks as massive as it sounds.

Real talk, this bass was designed by a player who has logged serious miles with artists like John Scofield and Dennis Chambers. It is built to deliver tone, clarity, power, and feel in one clean shot, whether you are tracking a modern R&B record or holding down a loud fusion gig.

10-Top Maple Snap Meets Mahogany Punch

The solidbody recipe of a carved 10-Top maple cap over a mahogany back is classic PRS for a reason. The maple adds attack, definition, and that piano like snap on the front of every note, while the mahogany brings the low end heft and warmth that makes a mix feel bigger without getting boomy.

The violin top carve and Cobalt Smokeburst finish are not just eye candy. The carve makes the bass feel more ergonomic against your body, and the burst highlights the figuring on the 10-Top so it looks alive under stage lights. You get boutique level aesthetics with a platform that is absolutely meant to be played, not babied.

GG 4 Neck: Fast, Confident, Effortless

The maple GG 4 neck profile is that sweet middle ground between slim and substantial. It fills your hand enough to keep your left hand relaxed, but it never feels like you are fighting extra wood when you need to fly up to the upper register.

A 34 inch scale, 24 frets, and a 10 inch radius rosewood fingerboard give you modern playability with familiar feel. Chords feel natural, runs stay clean, and sliding up to those high octave melodies is smooth and precise. The reinforced double acting truss rod keeps the neck stable, so your setup stays dialed in through seasons and tours.

GG4 Humbuckers With PRS/Grainger Active Circuit

The dual GG4 humbuckers are all about usable, musical range. They stay tight and articulate on the low end, have a focused midrange that cuts without honk, and a top end that stays glassy and clear instead of harsh. They handle fingers, pick, and slap with zero drama.

The PRS/Grainger active electronics give you two push/pull volume controls and a 3 knob EQ that make this bass a tone chameleon. You can scoop for sleek modern gospel and R&B, push the mids for fusion and rock, or bump a little top for extra snap. It is the kind of circuit that rewards small moves, so you can really fine tune how you sit in the band.

Gig Ready Hardware, Studio Grade Consistency

The PRS 4-String Bass bridge keeps intonation rock solid and lets the body ring freely, so notes bloom instead of choking out. Nickel hardware and purpose built bass tuners keep everything feeling smooth and precise, from tuning up to making tiny adjustments mid set.

At 9.8 pounds, this Grainger 4 feels reassuringly solid without crossing into boat anchor territory. It balances well on a strap, holds tuning, and ships in a hardshell case so it is protected between the studio, the van, and the gig. Photos are of the actual bass you will receive.

Dialed In By Players, For Players

Every instrument that comes through Moore Guitars gets our Player-Perfect setup, and this Grainger is no exception. Our techs are seasoned players who dial in intonation, action, and relief so it feels inspiring the second you plug in. Want it strung heavier for down tuned grooves or a touch lower for slick R&B runs? Tell us at checkout and we will set it up your way before it leaves the shop.

This PRS Grainger 4-String Bass is sitting in our Evansville, Indiana shop right now, inspected three times and ready to ship with our 72-Hour Love-It Guarantee. If you are chasing a bass that can cover modern sessions, serious gigs, and everything in between, this one absolutely hits that sweet spot.

The Lowdown

The Lowdown

We get it. Buying a guitar you haven’t played is a big decision. You need to know it’s going to feel right, sound right, and inspire you the second you open the case. We put together the questions we’d be asking if we were in your shoes—the real-world stuff that specs alone can’t answer. If there’s anything else you’re wondering about, just give us a call.

The Grainger 4 comes straight out of the same design brain that shaped Gary Grainger’s Private Stock instruments. You are getting the core recipe he relies on for recording and touring: maple over mahogany body, GG4 pickups, and the PRS/Grainger active circuit. The difference is that this is a Core model built for wider appeal and real world use, so you get that high end feel and response in a package you will not be afraid to take on every gig.
The active circuit is where this bass turns into a tool kit. The two push/pull volume controls and 3-band EQ give you fast control over how you sit in a mix. Need a deep, smooth pocket for R&B or gospel? Roll a little top off and bump the lows. Want mid presence for fusion or rock? Push the mids and let the GG4s growl. It is extremely tweakable, but still intuitive enough that you can dial in usable tones in seconds on a dark stage.
The 10-Top definitely looks incredible, but it is not just a vanity upgrade. That carved maple adds attack and definition to the note, especially when you are playing fast lines or intricate chord voicings. You get a little more snap on the front of the note and a more focused top end, which helps your parts stay clear in dense mixes. The fact that it also looks like a piece of art under stage lights is just a bonus.
9.8 pounds is right in that solid, pro-level bass zone. It is not featherweight, but the balance is what really matters, and this Grainger hangs well on a strap without neck dive. With a decent wide strap, you get the feel of a substantial instrument that sustains and projects without feeling like punishment by the third set. If you are used to classic pro basses, this will feel very natural.
Of course. Every bass gets our full Player-Perfect™ setup, but tell us your preferred string gauge and action at checkout, and we’ll dial it in exactly to your spec before it leaves the shop.
This bass is covered by our 72-Hour Love-It Guarantee. If you’re not completely inspired by it, just let us know. We’ll make it right.
If you order before 3 PM CST on a weekday, it ships the same day. We’ll get it into your hands fast with free, insured 2-3 day shipping.
