The Legend That Almost Wasn’t—Resurrected
Talk about a piece of history. This isn’t just a guitar; it’s a resurrection of a near-mythical prototype. The 1957 Mahogany Futura was the audacious precursor to the Explorer, a vision of the future that was so ahead of its time, it barely saw the light of day. Gibson Custom Shop has painstakingly recreated that rare original, swapping the later Korina for the prototype’s mahogany body and delivering a guitar that’s dripping with vibe, history, and raw, untamed tone.
Prototype Power: Mahogany & Custombuckers
This Futura is crafted from a 2-piece mahogany body, giving it a warmer, richer, and more resonant voice than its brighter-sounding descendants. The neck is a chunky ’50s Vintage profile—a proper handful that feels instantly familiar and solid. The magic really happens with the electronics. A pair of unpotted Custombucker Alnico 3 pickups deliver a truly vintage, PAF-style experience. They’re articulate, touch-sensitive, and bloom with harmonic overtones when you dig in. This is the sound of rock and roll being born.
VOS: Vintage Original Spec
The VOS (Vintage Patina) finish gives this guitar the look and feel of a perfectly preserved instrument from the ’50s. The aged gold hardware, from the Kluson single-ring tuners to the ABR-1 bridge, has a subtle, authentic sheen. Every detail, from the hide glue construction and True Historic parts to the unique split-V headstock with its raised Gibson logo, has been obsessed over. This is as close as you can get to owning a piece of Gibson’s ’50s golden era.
