Product Description

The Sound of Indie Rock Royalty

This isn’t just another offset. This is the Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster, a guitar designed with the godfather of alternative and indie rock, J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. It’s built to handle his signature blend of beautiful, chiming melodies and full-on sonic assaults. From the moment you plug it in, you can feel that it’s voiced for players who push boundaries, delivering a fatter, warmer tone than a typical Jazzmaster, but with all the clarity and string definition that makes these guitars so iconic.

Custom-Voiced Pickups

The heart of the Mascis Jazzmaster is its pair of single-coil Jazzmaster pickups. These aren’t your standard-issue pickups; they’ve been tweaked to J’s personal specs. They have a warmer, fuller voice that’s closer to a P90, giving you a powerful midrange punch that sings with sustain and takes fuzz pedals like an absolute champion. Yet, they still clean up beautifully, offering that classic, glassy offset tone when you roll the volume back.

Effortless Playability

A great guitar should feel like an extension of your hands, and this one delivers. The maple neck is carved into a comfortable “C” shape with a smooth gloss urethane finish that feels broken-in from day one. Combined with a modern 9.5″ radius Indian Laurel fingerboard and 21 jumbo frets, this guitar is built for deep bends and effortless lead work. The Adjusto-Matic™ bridge provides rock-solid tuning stability, even when you’re getting expressive with the vintage-style floating tremolo.

Dual-Circuit Versatility

Just like the original Jazzmasters, the J Mascis model features the powerful dual-circuit design. The “Lead” circuit gives you access to both pickups with a 3-way toggle and master volume/tone controls. But flip the slide switch up, and you engage the “Rhythm” circuit, which activates the neck pickup with its own dedicated thumbwheel volume and tone controls. It’s perfect for quickly switching between a crunchy lead tone and a darker, mellower rhythm sound on the fly.

Anatomy of a Tone Machine

Anatomy of a Tone Machine

Perfect for: Indie Rock • Alternative Rock • Shoegaze • Noise Rock

Tone

  • Bridge pickup delivers a punchy midrange with plenty of bite, perfect for cutting through a dense mix.
  • Neck pickup is warm, full, and round, offering glassy cleans and smooth, vocal-like lead tones.
  • The middle position is classic offset territory, giving you a scooped, chimey tone with fantastic string separation.
  • Responds beautifully to your picking dynamics; dig in for aggressive grit or play softly for sweet, blooming notes.

Playing Feel

  • The basswood body is lightweight and comfortable, making it a joy for long gigs and studio sessions.
  • The gloss-finished "C" shape neck and 9.5" radius fingerboard offer a modern, comfortable feel that's easy to play.
  • Jumbo frets make bending strings and fretting chords feel smooth and effortless.
  • The guitar feels solid and resonant, encouraging expressive playing with the floating tremolo system.

Versatility

  • Excels at both clean and dirty sounds; the pickups are warm enough for jazz but powerful enough for heavy fuzz.
  • A fantastic pedal platform. It loves fuzz, overdrive, and delay, just like J Mascis himself.
  • The dual-circuit electronics offer two distinct onboard sounds, making it a versatile tool for recording.
  • Sits perfectly in a mix, with enough midrange presence to be heard without being harsh.

We get it. Buying a guitar you haven’t played is a big decision. You need to know it’s going to feel right, sound right, and inspire you the second you open the case. We put together the questions we’d be asking if we were in your shoes—the real-world stuff that specs alone can’t answer. If there’s anything else you’re wondering about, just give us a call.

The key differences are in J’s hand-picked specs. This model features custom-voiced single-coil pickups that are hotter and warmer than vintage-style pickups, an Adjusto-Matic™ bridge for better tuning stability, a satin-finished neck for smooth playability, and jumbo frets for easier bending.
It’s like having a preset tone built into your guitar. When you slide the switch up, you activate the neck pickup only, bypassing the main controls. You then use the two thumbwheels to control the volume and tone for that circuit. It’s often set for a darker, mellower sound you can switch to instantly.
Of course. Every guitar gets our full Player-Perfect™ setup, but tell us your preferred string gauge and action at checkout, and we’ll dial it in exactly to your spec before it leaves the shop.
This guitar is covered by our 14-Day Return Policy. If you’re not completely inspired by it, just let us know. We’ll make it right.
Orders ship same day in most cases and arrive within 1-4 business days with free, insured shipping. We’ll get it into your hands as quickly as we can.
