Product Description

The Best of Both Worlds: Classic Tone, Exotic Beauty

This Martin Custom Shop D-14 is a masterclass in tone, blending the iconic power of an HD-28 with the stunning, unique figuring of Wild Grain East Indian Rosewood. It’s a player’s dream and a collector’s prize rolled into one. The heart of this dreadnought is its Adirondack spruce top—the holy grail of top woods, known for its incredible headroom, clarity, and power. Paired with the lush, overtone-rich Wild Grain Rosewood back and sides, you get a sound that’s both massive and articulate. It’s got that classic Martin boom, but with a detail and complexity that’s pure Custom Shop.

Golden Era Power Plant

Under the hood, this D-14 is built for performance. It features Martin’s Golden Era-style, forward-shifted X-bracing, all hand-shaped for maximum resonance. This bracing pattern is legendary for a reason—it unleashes the top’s full vibrational potential, resulting in a guitar that’s incredibly responsive to your attack. Whether you’re a heavy-handed flatpicker digging in on bluegrass runs or a singer-songwriter who needs a dynamic cannon for open chords, this guitar delivers with punch, warmth, and seemingly endless sustain.

Effortless Playability

Martin didn’t just focus on the tone; the feel is dialed in for pure comfort. The select mahogany neck is carved into the player-favorite Modified Low Oval profile with a High Performance Taper. It’s a modern feel that’s substantial enough to grab onto but sleek enough for fast fretwork. Combined with the shorter 24.9” scale length, which slightly reduces string tension, this guitar is an absolute joy to play for hours on end. From the first fret to the last, it just feels right.

We get it. Buying a guitar you haven’t played is a big decision. You need to know it’s going to feel right, sound right, and inspire you the second you open the case. We put together the questions we’d be asking if we were in your shoes—the real-world stuff that specs alone can’t answer. If there’s anything else you’re wondering about, just give us a call.

Wild Grain East Indian Rosewood is specially selected for its dramatic and intense figuring, which you can see on the back of this guitar. Tonally, it delivers the same rich, complex sound as standard premium rosewood, but its aesthetic is far more exotic and unique. It’s a visual upgrade that makes the instrument a true one-of-a-kind.
Adirondack spruce is stiffer and lighter than the more common Sitka spruce. This gives it a higher ceiling for volume—you can strum it much harder before the sound starts to compress. It also tends to have a quicker, more direct attack and exceptional clarity, making it a favorite among bluegrass flatpickers and hard strummers who need to cut through a mix.
Of course. Every guitar gets our full Player-Perfect™ setup, but tell us your preferred string gauge and action at checkout, and we’ll dial it in exactly to your spec before it leaves the shop.
This guitar is covered by our 72-Hour Love-It Guarantee. If you’re not completely inspired by it, just let us know. We’ll make it right.
If you order before 3 PM CST on a weekday, it ships the same day. We’ll get it into your hands fast with free, insured 2-3 day shipping.
