The Flagship Les Paul Custom – Tuxedo Class, Modern Firepower

This is the Les Paul Custom your younger self dreamed about. Alpine White, gold hardware, ebony fingerboard, and that thick, singing sustain that made this model a legend in the first place.

Under the tuxedo looks you get a 2-piece maple top on a solid mahogany body with 9-hole weight relief, a long-tenon mahogany neck, and a matched set of 490R and 498T humbuckers. It feels like a proper Custom, hits hard when you dig in, and cleans up with glassy articulation when you roll back the volume.

Maple Over Mahogany For Classic Les Paul Punch

The recipe is pure Les Paul: a 2-piece plain maple top over a 1-piece mahogany back. The maple adds that upper-mid cut and snap, while the mahogany brings the thick low mids and bloom that make chords feel huge and single notes feel vocal.

Gibson’s gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish lets the wood breathe and resonate instead of choking it under plastic. The 9-hole weight relief keeps this one from feeling like a boat anchor without killing the authority and sustain you expect from a Custom. At 9.8 lbs it sits right in the sweet spot for a serious stage guitar.

Ebony Fingerboard Feel And Piano-Like Sustain

If you have never lived with an ebony board, here is the lowdown: it is fast, smooth, and incredibly articulate. Notes jump off the fretboard with a piano-like attack and then bloom into long, singing sustain.

The 12 inch radius and medium-jumbo frets make bends feel buttery without fretting out, and chords stay comfortable all the way up the neck. Mother of pearl block inlays complete the classic Custom look while giving you clear visual markers on dark stages.

490R / 498T: From Jazz Cleans To Hard Rock Grind

Gibson voiced this Custom to cover everything from smoky jazz to hard rock. The 490R in the neck gives you warm, smooth cleans and thick, vocal lead tones that stay clear, not muddy. Perfect for blues lines, chord melody, and big, glassy cleans.

Flip to the 498T bridge and it brings the bite. You get tight lows, aggressive upper mids, and enough output to push an amp into rich, gritty overdrive without getting harsh. Together, with the 3-way toggle and hand-wired 500K CTS controls, you can ride the volume and tone knobs and go from chime to roar without touching your pedals.

Modern Medium C Neck That Gets Out Of Your Way

The Modern Medium C neck profile hits that Goldilocks zone. It measures about 0.84 inches at the first fret and a full 1.00 inch at the 12th, so there is enough meat to grab onto, but it never feels like a baseball bat.

It is the kind of neck you forget about while you play. Chords feel solid, vibrato feels controlled, and fast lines stay clean and relaxed. The long neck tenon anchors the whole thing into the body for extra sustain and a more immediate, connected feel under your hands.

Custom Shop Craftsmanship, Stage Ready Details

This is Gibson Custom Shop, so the details are dialed. Gold hardware, Grover kidney tuners, multi-ply binding, black multi-ply pickguard, engraved “Les Paul Custom” truss rod cover, and gold-plated pickup covers all add up to that iconic tuxedo vibe.

Under the hood, you get a hand-wired harness, Switchcraft toggle and jack, and rock-solid Tune-O-Matic bridge and stop bar tailpiece. It arrives in a Custom Shop hardshell case with the Certificate of Authenticity booklet, so you know exactly what you are getting.

The Lowdown

The Lowdown

We get it. Buying a guitar you haven’t played is a big decision. You need to know it’s going to feel right, sound right, and inspire you the second you open the case. We put together the questions we’d be asking if we were in your shoes—the real-world stuff that specs alone can’t answer. If there’s anything else you’re wondering about, just give us a call.

Real talk: this is the Gibson Custom Shop flagship, not an off-the-rack production model. You are getting a long-tenon neck joint, hand-wired electronics, an ebony board, tighter wood selection, and a level of fretwork and finishing that you simply do not see on most factory guitars. If you want the tuxedo Les Paul that feels like a lifer, this is the tier you are looking for.
The 9-hole pattern keeps the guitar from being a back-breaker without turning it into a hollow feeling featherweight. You still get that solid Les Paul thump, sustain, and low-mid authority, just with a little less strain over a three-set night. At 9.8 lbs it feels substantial on the strap but not punishing.
The Modern Medium C is right in the middle. At about 0.84″ at the first fret and 1.00″ at the 12th, it is beefier than a super-slim shred neck but nowhere near a huge baseball bat profile. It is comfortable for most players coming from modern Gibsons or Fenders, with enough depth for good leverage and vibrato without fighting you.
Absolutely. The 490R neck pickup gives you smooth, rounded cleans with great clarity for jazz voicings and chord melody. Kick over to the 498T bridge and you have all the bite and output you need for classic and hard rock. Use the 3-way toggle and the hand-wired controls and you can live anywhere from smoky and warm to tight and aggressive without changing guitars.
Of course. Every guitar gets our full Player-Perfect™ setup, but tell us your preferred string gauge and action at checkout, and we’ll dial it in exactly to your spec before it leaves the shop.
This guitar is covered by our 72-Hour Love-It Guarantee. If you’re not completely inspired by it, just let us know. We’ll make it right.
If you order before 3 PM CST on a weekday, it ships the same day. We’ll get it into your hands fast with free, insured 2-3 day shipping.
