Product Description

A Murphy Lab Masterpiece, Built to Inspire

This isn’t just a guitar; it’s a time machine. Straight from the Gibson Custom Shop, this Les Paul Custom wears a Light Aged Antique Gold finish from the wizards at the Murphy Lab. It feels and breathes like a genuine vintage instrument that’s been played, loved, and looked after for decades. Every subtle finish check and lovingly aged piece of gold hardware tells a story, giving you the soul of a classic without the vintage price tag.

Modern Power, Vintage Heart

Under the hood, this Les Paul is pure rock and roll. A pair of Gibson’s 490R and 490T pickups deliver the goods, serving up a tone that’s rooted in the legendary PAF sound but with a modern twist. The Alnico II magnets provide that warm, creamy response you crave, but with an added midrange bite that cuts through a mix with authority. Whether you’re playing clean, soulful passages or driving your amp into glorious overdrive, these pickups respond with incredible articulation and power.

Unmistakable Feel and Playability

The moment you pick it up, it feels like home. The solid mahogany body and maple top provide the timeless resonance that made the Les Paul a legend. The mahogany neck, carved to a substantial yet comfortable profile (.818” at the first fret), fills the hand perfectly, while the silky ebony fingerboard makes for a buttery playing experience. Combined with the long neck tenon construction, the sustain on this guitar is simply off the charts. It’s a player’s guitar, through and through.

Anatomy of a Tone Machine

Anatomy of a Tone Machine

Perfect for: Rock • Blues • Jazz • Classic Rock

Tone

  • Bridge pickup delivers a punchy, articulate bite with boosted upper-mids for modern rock aggression.
  • Neck pickup offers smooth, warm, and creamy PAF-style tones perfect for lush chords and singing leads.
  • The middle position is balanced and clear, blending warmth with treble snap for versatile rhythm work.
  • Responds beautifully to your pick attack, cleaning up nicely with a softer touch and roaring to life when you dig in.

Playing Feel

  • The classic Les Paul weight and balance make it feel solid and substantial, ready for any stage.
  • The ebony fingerboard is glassy and fast, while the neck profile offers a comfortable handful for chording and leads.
  • Notes bloom with exceptional sustain, thanks to the solid mahogany body and long tenon neck joint.
  • A truly inspiring instrument that feels broken-in and comfortable from the very first note.

Versatility

  • Effortlessly moves from warm, jazzy cleans to searing high-gain rock tones.
  • Takes pedals like a champ, providing a rich tonal foundation for any effect you throw at it.
  • In the studio, its articulate voice and low noise floor make it a first-call recording guitar.
  • Cuts through a dense band mix without sounding harsh or thin, sitting perfectly in its sonic space.

We get it. Buying a guitar you haven’t played is a big decision. You need to know it’s going to feel right, sound right, and inspire you the second you open the case. We put together the questions we’d be asking if we were in your shoes—the real-world stuff that specs alone can’t answer. If there’s anything else you’re wondering about, just give us a call.

The Murphy Lab is a dedicated division of the Gibson Custom Shop focused on creating scientifically accurate, vintage-correct aging. The ‘Light Aged’ finish on this Les Paul features subtle lacquer checking and softened hardware, replicating a guitar that was bought decades ago and carefully maintained. It feels and resonates like a true vintage instrument, right out of the case.
They start with a vintage PAF heart but are designed for the modern player. Using Alnico II magnets and a special winding, they offer a slightly hotter output and a more pronounced midrange bite compared to traditional PAFs. This gives you classic warmth and feel, but with added clarity and punch to handle higher gain settings without getting muddy.
Of course. Every guitar gets our full Player-Perfect™ setup, but tell us your preferred string gauge and action at checkout, and we’ll dial it in exactly to your spec before it leaves the shop.
This guitar is covered by our 72-Hour Love-It Guarantee. If you’re not completely inspired by it, just let us know. We’ll make it right.
Orders ship same day in most cases and arrive within 1-4 business days with free, insured shipping. We’ll get it into your hands as quickly as we can.
