Vintage 56 Les Paul soul with P-90 bite and a hand picked figured top

This Gibson Custom Shop 1956 Les Paul Standard P-90 Figured Top in Wine Red is the kind of guitar you buy once and keep for life. Old school 50s feel, snarling P-90 punch, and a AAA figured maple cap that was personally picked out for this build.

Under 8.6 lbs of light mahogany and maple, hide glue construction, and True Historic details, this thing rings acoustically before you ever plug it in. Hit an open G and you feel the whole guitar light up, then those Custom Shop P-90s translate every bit of that into the amp.

AAA figured maple over light mahogany for sustain and bloom

The top is a 2 piece AAA highly figured maple cap that was hand selected, so you are not rolling the dice on the flame. Underneath is a 1 piece light mahogany body that keeps the overall weight at a very comfortable 8.6 lbs, right in that sweet spot where sustain and comfort meet.

Hide glue rim construction and traditional 56 Les Paul routing let the body resonate like a good old burst. The Wine Red finish over the figured maple gives it a rich, classy look that still lets the wood pop under stage lights. Cream body binding frames it all up with that unmistakable Les Paul silhouette.

58 True Historic neck that feels broken in from day one

The neck is mahogany with a 58 True Historic profile that measures about 0.88 inches at the first fret and 0.99 inches at the 12th. It fills your hand in a satisfying way without getting into baseball bat territory, so you can dig into bends and vibrato without fighting the guitar.

A 1 piece Indian rosewood fingerboard topped with Jescar FW50078 fretwire feels smooth and precise under your fingers. Nylon nut, cream binding, and tortoise side dots keep everything feeling vintage correct yet player friendly. Real talk, this is the kind of neck that makes you want to keep playing way past midnight.

Custom Shop P-90s with 50s attitude

Both pickups are Custom Shop P-90 soap bars with historic black covers, and they absolutely deliver. The bridge pickup gives you that raw, gritty midrange that cuts through any mix, while staying articulate enough for tight rhythm work. Flip to the neck for thick, vocal lead tones and smoky jazz chords.

The 2019 CPA circuit with PIO caps and vintage taper pots means the controls actually do something musical. Roll the volume back and the guitar cleans up without going dull, or use the tone knobs to glide from glassy to woolly without losing clarity. It is a killer pedal platform but honestly sounds huge straight into a good tube amp.

True Historic hardware details that keep you locked in

An ABR-1 non wire bridge and lightweight tailpiece with long studs give you that classic Les Paul snap and sustain. Kluson reissue tuners keep the look right and the tuning solid, even if you are bending whole step and a half notes all night.

Black R9 pickguard routed for P-90s, True Historic black top hat knobs with silver inserts, reissue jackplate, black switch tip and washer, and reissue black backplates with the Custom Shop medallion pull the whole look together. Even the aluminum end pin is period inspired. It is the kind of nerdy detail work that tells you the Custom Shop was not phoning this one in.

The Lowdown

The Lowdown

We get it. Buying a guitar you haven’t played is a big decision. You need to know it’s going to feel right, sound right, and inspire you the second you open the case. We put together the questions we’d be asking if we were in your shoes—the real-world stuff that specs alone can’t answer. If there’s anything else you’re wondering about, just give us a call.

P-90s live right between single coils and humbuckers. Compared to a humbucker Les Paul, this 56 P-90 build has more bite and clarity, with a bit less low-end thickness and a more open midrange. Chords stay articulate, even with gain, and lead lines have this vocal, throaty quality that really cuts. If you love Les Paul sustain but wish your humbuckers had more definition and air, this is your lane.
The 58 True Historic carve measures about 0.88″ at the first fret and 0.99″ at the 12th, so it is a medium-fat profile that fills your hand without feeling bulky. It is round and supportive for bluesy bends and vibrato, but still quick enough for more intricate lines. If you like a neck that feels substantial and connected without being a club, you will feel right at home here.
Honestly, it is both. The hand picked AAA figured top, True Historic parts, and Custom Shop build quality absolutely put it in collector territory. But everything about it is built for the stage and studio: 8.6 lb weight, rock solid hardware, and P-90s that cover a ton of ground. If you want a guitar that will hold its value but also earn every bit of buckle rash, this is it.
The top on this one is AAA highly figured maple that was specifically picked out for this build. That means you are not getting a random flame pattern – you are getting a cap that was chosen for its character and movement. Under the Wine Red finish it has a deep, three-dimensional look that shifts under the light. If you want a Custom Shop Les Paul that looks as serious as it sounds, this one nails it.
Of course. Every guitar gets our full Player-Perfect™ setup, but tell us your preferred string gauge and action at checkout, and we’ll dial it in exactly to your spec before it leaves the shop.
This guitar is covered by our 72-Hour Love-It Guarantee. If you’re not completely inspired by it, just let us know. We’ll make it right.
If you order before 3 PM CST on a weekday, it ships the same day. We’ll get it into your hands fast with free, insured 2-3 day shipping.
