Product Description

Vintage Bones, Hot-Rodded Soul

This isn’t just another SG—it’s a bona fide rock machine with a classic soul and a fiery heart. This Gibson SG Standard ’61 is a throwback to the golden era, boasting the period-correct slim-taper neck and iconic all-mahogany body that made these guitars legendary. But the previous owner gave it a serious upgrade, swapping in a set of Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates pickups. The result? You get the buttery playability and timeless vibe of a ’61, supercharged with the raw, gritty bite of a Texas blues-rock monster. It’s in excellent shape and comes with the original hardshell case—and for the collectors, the original ’60s Burstbucker pickups are included in the case.

The Pearly Gates Upgrade

Let’s talk tone. The stock Burstbuckers are great, but the Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates are legendary for a reason. Inspired by the pickups in Billy Gibbons’ famed ’59 Les Paul, they’re slightly overwound for a hotter, ruder attitude than a typical P.A.F. They serve up a focused midrange punch and a top-end sizzle that cuts through a mix with authority. Whether you’re digging into greasy blues bends or hitting a big open chord, these pickups bloom with rich harmonics and a signature growl.

Classic ’61 Feel

The magic of the SG has always been its lightning-fast feel, and this one is no exception. The SlimTaper mahogany neck is instantly comfortable, letting your hand fly from the nut to the 22nd fret with zero resistance. Paired with a classic 12″ radius rosewood fingerboard, it’s built for speed and effortless bending. The lightweight, devil-horned mahogany body is resonant and balanced, making it a perfect partner for long gigs and studio sessions where comfort is key.

Anatomy of a Tone Machine

Anatomy of a Tone Machine

Perfect for: Classic Rock • Blues • Hard Rock • Southern Rock

Tone

  • Bridge pickup delivers a rude, gritty bite with a pronounced Texas sizzle.
  • Neck pickup is warm and sweet when played soft, but snarls with attitude when you dig in.
  • Middle position offers a balanced, open chime perfect for rhythm work.
  • Responds beautifully to your pick attack—cleans up with a light touch, screams when you hit it hard.

Playing Feel

  • Classic lightweight SG feel that won't break your back.
  • The SlimTaper neck is fast and comfortable, ideal for both chording and soloing.
  • Effortless string bending thanks to the 12" radius and medium jumbo frets.
  • Feels broken-in and ready to go right out of the case.

Versatility

  • Goes from glassy cleans to full-throated roar just by rolling the volume knob.
  • Loves pedals—the Pearly Gates have enough clarity to handle fuzz, overdrive, and delay without getting muddy.
  • A studio secret weapon; its focused midrange sits perfectly in a dense recording.
  • Cuts through the mix on a live stage, ensuring you're always heard.

The Lowdown

We get it. Buying a guitar you haven’t played is a big decision. You need to know it’s going to feel right, sound right, and inspire you the second you open the case. We put together the questions we’d be asking if we were in your shoes—the real-world stuff that specs alone can’t answer. If there’s anything else you’re wondering about, just give us a call.

Great question. The original Burstbuckers have that classic, lower-output P.A.F. vibe—woody, airy, and sweet. The Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates are like a hotter, meaner version of that. They have a stronger midrange focus and a bit more output, which gives them a ‘rude’ character that’s perfect for blues, classic rock, and anything that needs to cut through with some attitude. The originals are included, so you can always swap back if you want that vintage sound.
Absolutely. The SlimTaper profile is one of the most comfortable and fastest necks Gibson makes. It’s thinner than the ’50s rounded profiles, which makes it incredibly easy to navigate for players of all hand sizes. It’s designed for speed and comfort, reducing fatigue during long playing sessions.
Of course. Every guitar gets our full Player-Perfect™ setup, but tell us your preferred string gauge and action at checkout, and we’ll dial it in exactly to your spec before it leaves the shop.
This guitar is covered by our 14-Day Return Policy. If you’re not completely inspired by it, just let us know. We’ll make it right.
If you order before 3 PM CST on a weekday, it ships the same day. We’ll get it into your hands fast with free, insured 2-3 day shipping.
