Product Description

The Workhorse. Ready for the Stage and Studio.

This isn’t just a guitar—it’s a piece of music history. The Gibson J-45 is the legendary “Workhorse,” beloved by artists for decades for its unmatched versatility and expressive, balanced tone. This pre-owned 2024 Standard model is in very good condition and delivers that iconic sound in spades, with the classic combo of a Sitka spruce top and mahogany body. It’s got that warm, woody thump in the low end and a mid-range that just growls when you dig in.

Tone That’s Both Powerful and Sweet

The magic of a great J-45 lies in its ability to sit perfectly in a mix or command a room on its own. The traditional hand-scalloped X-bracing lets the Sitka spruce top breathe, giving you incredible dynamic range—from delicate fingerpicking to hard strumming, the notes bloom with rich character. The mahogany back and sides add a fundamental warmth and focus that has defined the sound of countless folk, rock, and country records.

Modern Playability, Classic Feel

Gibson nailed the feel with the SlimTaper neck profile. It’s substantial enough to grab onto for big chords but fast enough for intricate lead work, a perfect middle ground for any player. The 12″ radius rosewood fingerboard feels instantly familiar and comfortable under the fingers. Paired with a gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish that will only get better with age, this is a guitar that feels as good as it sounds.

Plug In and Play with L.R. Baggs

Ready for the gig right out of the included hardshell case, this J-45 comes factory-equipped with an L.R. Baggs VTC pickup system. The soundhole-mounted volume and tone controls are discreet and intuitive, allowing you to shape your amplified sound on the fly without altering the guitar’s classic aesthetic. It’s a top-tier electronic system that translates the guitar’s natural acoustic voice with stunning clarity.

The Lowdown

We get it. Buying a guitar you haven’t played is a big decision. You need to know it’s going to feel right, sound right, and inspire you the second you open the case. We put together the questions we’d be asking if we were in your shoes—the real-world stuff that specs alone can’t answer. If there’s anything else you’re wondering about, just give us a call.

It’s the magic combination of the slope-shouldered body, a Sitka spruce top, and mahogany back and sides. This recipe delivers a uniquely balanced sound—warm but clear, with a strong midrange that’s perfect for accompanying a voice. It’s not too boomy and not too bright, which is why they call it ‘The Workhorse’.
It’s fantastic. The VTC is designed to be very transparent, so what you hear plugged in is a genuine reflection of the guitar’s natural acoustic voice. The soundhole controls are a huge plus—they’re easy to adjust without ruining the guitar’s classic look.
Of course. Every guitar gets our full Player-Perfect™ setup, but tell us your preferred string gauge and action at checkout, and we’ll dial it in exactly to your spec before it leaves the shop.
This guitar is covered by our 14-Day Return Policy. If you’re not completely inspired by it, just let us know. We’ll make it right.
If you order before 3 PM CST on a weekday, it ships the same day. We’ll get it into your hands fast with free, insured 2-3 day shipping.
