Modern Active J Bass Power With Sleek, Stage-Ready Attitude

If you want a Jazz Bass that hits harder, stays quiet, and looks like it belongs under stage lights, this Squier Contemporary Active Jazz Bass is your lane. Ash body, flat white finish, black chrome hardware, and a matching headstock give it serious stealth vibes, while the active electronics keep your tone huge and polished.

Under the hood you get dual Squier SQR ceramic humbuckers feeding a 9 volt active preamp, so you can go from deep, smooth R&B to bright, snappy slap without touching your amp. Pair that with a slim modern C neck and a 12 inch maple board and you have a bass that feels fast, stays comfortable, and reacts to every nuance in your right hand.

Ash Body, Flat White Finish, Blacked-Out Hardware

The ash body gives you that classic Jazz Bass mix of punchy mids, tight lows, and enough top end to cut without getting brittle. It is a solid, dependable platform that stays articulate whether you are fingerstyle, pick, or slap focused.

The matte polyester finish in Flat White keeps things sleek and understated, with black chrome hardware and a 3 ply black pickguard setting off the whole look. On a dark stage this thing pops just enough without screaming for attention, and up close it feels tough enough to survive real gigging life.

Slim Modern C Neck With Fast Maple Board

The slim modern C neck profile is built for players who live above the fifth fret as much as below it. It fills your hand just enough to feel solid, but it never fights you when you are moving around the neck or digging into fast lines.

The 12 inch radius maple fingerboard and 20 narrow tall frets keep everything feeling precise and controlled. The flatter radius makes bends, slides, and vibrato smooth, while the narrow tall wire gives you clean intonation and easy articulation. The natural satin urethane finish on the neck and matching headstock stays fast and slick even under hot stage lights.

Dual SQR Humbuckers And 9V Active Preamp

The heart of this bass is the pair of Squier SQR ceramic humbuckers. They deliver a big, focused low end with plenty of mid punch, and the humbucking design keeps things quieter than vintage style single coils when the stage power is sketchy.

The onboard 9V active preamp gives you intuitive control: master volume, pickup blend, a traditional tone control, plus stacked bass and treble boost. Need modern hi fi slap with bright, glassy top end and tight lows? Boost the bass and treble. Want more old school growl for rock and soul? Ease back the treble, push a little bass, and let your right hand do the work. It is versatile without being fiddly.

Gig-Ready Hardware And Real World Reliability

A 4 saddle standard bridge keeps your intonation honest and your attack focused, while the open gear tuners hold tuning reliably from rehearsal to last encore. The black chrome hardware is not just for looks either, it is built to handle sweat, travel, and constant use.

The synthetic bone nut, solid 4 bolt Squier neck joint, and dual action truss rod all add up to a bass that you can dial in exactly how you like and keep there. Real talk, this is the kind of instrument you can drag to rehearsals, churches, clubs, and studios without babying it.

Dialed In By Moore Guitars And Ready To Work

The Lowdown

The Lowdown

We get it. Buying a guitar you haven’t played is a big decision. You need to know it’s going to feel right, sound right, and inspire you the second you open the case. We put together the questions we’d be asking if we were in your shoes—the real-world stuff that specs alone can’t answer. If there’s anything else you’re wondering about, just give us a call.

The core feel is familiar Jazz Bass territory, but the tone is more modern and flexible. Instead of vintage single coils, you get dual SQR ceramic humbuckers feeding an active 9V preamp, so there is more headroom, more low end, and a smoother top. If you want classic J style clarity you can keep the EQ relatively flat and ease back the tone, but when you need extra punch or sparkle you have it on tap instead of having to rely on your amp.
The controls are super intuitive: volume, blend, a traditional tone, and one stacked knob for bass and treble boost. The ceramic humbuckers and active circuit are voiced for clear, high fidelity tone, so you get plenty of punch without a bunch of extra hiss. Start with everything near the middle, then nudge the bass and treble until it sits right in the mix. It is built to be a working player’s tool, not a confusing science project.
This thing lives in the modern world. It shines in worship and gospel, modern rock, funk, R&B, pop, and cover band situations where you have to cover a lot of ground. The active EQ lets you go from deep, supportive lows for ballads to bright, cutting slap for upbeat tunes. If you are playing super vintage jazz or Motown only, a passive J or P might be a better fit, but for most modern gigs this bass covers a ton of ground.
If you are a beginner who knows you are in this for the long haul, this is a great first serious bass. The neck is comfortable, the setup is dialed, and the electronics will grow with you instead of holding you back. Intermediate and working players will appreciate how easily it drops into a band mix and how quickly you can shape your sound. It is a legit tool, not a toy.
Of course. Every bass gets our full Player-Perfect setup, but tell us your preferred string gauge, tuning, and action at checkout and we’ll dial it in exactly to your spec before it leaves the shop. If you like it a little stiffer for digging in or slinkier for fast runs, we can make that happen.
This bass is covered by our 14-Day Return Policy. If you’re not completely inspired by it, just let us know. We’ll make it right and help you land on something that fits you better.
If you order before 3 PM CST on a weekday, it ships the same day. We’ll get it into your hands fast with free, insured 2-3 day shipping so you can put it straight to work.
Call us at (888) 794-8482. You’ll talk to a real musician who can walk you through neck feel, compare it to other basses you’re considering, or help you decide if this is the right fit for your gigs and your rig. No pressure, just honest guidance.
