Notes from the Moore Staff
Let's get this out of the way first - don't sell this guitar short if you're an experienced player looking for an acoustic because its "inexpensive"; and don't think it's too expensive to have as a first guitar.
The Academy series guitars - whether steel or nylon string are an incredible value. This writer personally spent time at Taylor when these guitars were first conceived, and the chatter around the room - Bob Taylor and Andy Powers to name a few (including me!) are all in a circle, and this is the type of comments that were thrown around - "we can't afford to put out a "bad" inexpensive guitar - it HAS to be as good as we can possibly make it"......"this guitar has to inspire new players to continue on - the world needs more guitar players".........."this guitar has to be just as good for intermediate and advanced players as well - they are part of the Taylor family and know quality. No corners can be cut"......."we need to provide everything a guitarist NEEDS - it has to have everything that's important, but nothing that a player can do without".
Okay - so what we have here is a guitar with amazing playability, the same Taylor advanced neck, an armrest for comfort as well as keeping the top moving, a SOLID spruce top that is torrefied for the best possible tone and projection, and the perfect tone woods to make every strum or pick resonate properly with the top and the bridge; and the fretboard and bridge must be of a high quality wood that will properly hold the frets and the strings so as a player frets and strums this guitar everything will "work in unison". The adornments are minimal, but the quality of workmanship is there.
This writer also remembers his days of working in a music store and talking with band directors about first instruments as well as talking with parents about their children's' desire to play a musical instrument. It boils down to this - give a kid a sub-standard instrument, and it will play terrible, sound terrible, and you instantly set that child up to fail. They will think it's "too hard", they won't want to practice, and they will give up. You'll think "whew - glad I only "wasted" $100 on a pawn shop instrument instead of INVESTING in their future. The choice should be easy. Let's look at it in a different perspective - you want to learn how to play golf, so the club you use has a loose clubface, and the grips are slippery, BUT you got a good deal at the pawn shop...... Every time you hit the ball it shanks to the right or hooks to the left (if you hit it at all). Your conclusion: golf is hard, I stink, and I'm sure glad I didn't spend a lot of money. NO! You didn't set yourself up for success. You reaped what you sowed, you failed, and you get to reward yourself by missing out on years - maybe a lifetime of enjoyment.
I said all that to say this - Taylor Academy guitars in this writer's opinion are one of the best guitar values on the market. They give you everything you need, and nothing you don't. Need a great stage guitar that you don't care if it gets "beauty marks"? Get an Academy. Have someone wanting to learn? Show them an Academy. Watch them grow and love making music.
Notes from Taylor Guitars
Designed with newer guitar players in mind but appealing to experienced players as well, the Academy 10e combines the rich voice of the Dreadnought body shape with a comfortable feel that will encourage beginners to grow their skills. A solid torrefied spruce top serves up plenty of volume and articulation with a splash of played-in sweetness, making this a musically versatile choice for players wanting a guitar with a broad sonic range. In this model, the slender Taylor neck features a slightly narrower nut width of 1-11/16", helping make chords and notes easier to hold, and the armrest takes some pressure off your strumming arm. The Academy 10e includes an ES-B pickup with a built-in digital tuner and a gig bag.
