A few notes from the Moore Guitars staff concerning this Martin OMJM John Mayer:
There are few players (in this writers opinion) who deserve a specific signature model guitar - we obviously should all agree that folks like Les Paul, Eric Clapton, Tony Rice, - players of a specific level of creativity all deserve to attain this certain piece of musical legacy by having guitars with their own name on them. This writer feels that John Mayer is one of them. From his heritage through Berkley, his original acoustic albums, amazing electric work, and his contributions to countless authored pieces of music certainly qualify Mr. Mayer to be part of this group. Having said that, this Martin OMJM certainly provides players of all levels an opportunity to own a great instrument to inspire them to great musical achievements! Starting out with an OM28-JM that quickly sold out, Martin asked John to collaborate on a 2nd model, hence the OMJM was born. Important Note - these are limited in production, so this is our 'one"!
Okay - enough history - what's cool about this guitar? Pretty much everything - from the Gray burst finish, to the tonal balance, to the sound projection from a "smaller box"! Let's talk about the size first - there is always a little bit of confusion about the difference between an OM and a 000. Let's try to answer that with one sentence - the bodies are the same, but the neck scale is shorter on the 000 - 24.9" vs 25.4". This provides the OM to "feel" like a "standard sized" guitar that most folks are more familiar with in terms of "reach" and string tension. Sometimes ("sometimes") players that are a little "heavy in their right hand" will prefer the longer scale due to the higher string tension, so they would gravitate to the OM; while others may prefer the lighter tension 24.9" scale of a 000. As for other playing notes, there is a low profile standard tapered mahogany neck with an ebony fingerboard. A diamond volute is carved specifically with playing comfort in mind, combining a 1-11/16-inch width that helps provide an easy fretting experience.
Lastly - we should discuss amplified tone - John is pretty particular about this, so there was a very specific box that needed to be checked on what pickup system that should be used. What was chosen was a Fishman Gold Plus Natural I system that would be factory installed in the guitar. The result is a warm tone that sounds about as close to what the guitar sounds like acoustically! A guitar of this quality needs to sound as close to "the box" as possible, and using a high quality acoustic amp and/or PA, this writer didn't experience any brittle sounds in the upper end, or muddied sound in the lower end. It sounded like it was supposed to sound....a louder acoustic guitar.
A few notes from Martin Guitars:
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of John Mayer’s popular OM-28JM model, Martin collaborated again with John Mayer to offer this tasteful anniversary Orchestra Model. It exhibits the same versatility for today’s diverse contemporary musical styles and includes a unique label with Mayer’s electronic signature. This model will only be available through August 2024, so make sure to check it out soon! If you’re looking for something with a little more bling, check out the OM-45 John Mayer 20th Anniversary.
