A few notes from the Moore Guitars staff concerning this beautiful Martin 000-28EC:
Before we get into the “hard specs” of this particular guitar, let's get an overall, holistic view of this instrument. Few names are as well known as Mr. Slowhand....and when you watch him play this exact model there are a couple things to instantly recognize - the relative ease he has playing it - the size of the guitar is "comfortable" (which we will get into in more detail below). The neck is a soft V, so it feels almost as comfortable as a Clapton Strat might (but certainly more substantial since its an acoustic guitar) with a 1-3/4" nut and a standard neck taper.
Let's briefly talk about the size of this 000 guitar vs an OM - there is always a little bit of confusion about the difference. Let's try to answer that with one sentence - the bodies are virtually the same, but the neck scale is shorter on the 000 - 24.9" vs the OM's 25.4". Okay - so what? Well - there is a definite "comfort" aspect to the 000's shorter 24.9" scale and tension that just feels...well... "ahhhhh"! Players may appreciate that more "intimate feel"; where the OM's 25.4" feels a little more like a "standard sized" guitar in terms of "reach" and string tension. So which one do you choose? A simple test: sometimes ("sometimes") players that are a little "heavy in their right hand" might prefer the longer scale due to the higher string tension - a harder strum may produce less of a fret buzz (if it's really a hard hit!), so they would gravitate to the OM; where lighter touch (strumming or fingerstyle) players might prefer the shorter scale.
Let's take this a little further down the rabbit hole, because this EC model is an interesting specimen in the guitar world. Some brands of guitars use shorter scales on their 12 fret model guitars (where the body joins the neck at the octave 12 fret) or the longer scales are on their 14 fret model guitars(where the body meets the neck at the 14th fret). This EC model is a "hybrid" since you have a 14 fret guitar with the "shorter" 24.9" scale! (Everybody got that?). 14 frets = easier access to higher notes, and lighter string tension. It makes for much easier left hand technique! The 000 size just lends itself to an entirely different playing experience then a full sized dread or jumbo. Considering that EC plays chords as well as leads, strings are easier to bend on a short scale and you can reach more frets on the 14 fret model! Yea - Eric put some thought into this - 14 frets, easier string bending, smaller more intimate size. Got it.... Good job EC!
The Martin 000-28 Eric Clapton Signature Model is based on Clapton's guitar that he actually used for his MTV Unplugged performance, and if you heard that performance, you'll agree that it was a "very easy guitar to listen to" due to it's tone - a very sweet mix from lows, to mids, to highs - everything rang out very clear with just the right amount of sustain.
A few Notes from Martin Guitars:
The popular Martin 000-28EC signature model is a meticulously crafted tribute to the pre-war guitar played by Eric Clapton during his legendary MTV Unplugged performance. Its 000 body size delivers a well-balanced tone across all six strings, and the East Indian rosewood back and sides offer rich resonance and depth, complemented by a spruce top for clarity and brightness. A shorter 24.9" scale length, preferred by Clapton, is ideal for both fingerstyle playing and expressive bends, while the modified V neck made from genuine mahogany provides comfort and control. The guitar's looks are enhanced with a 1935 sunburst top, herringbone inlay, and a full gloss finish. Whether you're playing Slowhand's classics or your own unplugged tunes, this special edition guitar embodies Clapton's influence on acoustic music, offering the same tonal richness and playability that marked his iconic performance and career.
